I'm not quite sure where to start, so let me start from the beginning!
My name is Melanie, but most people call me Mel.
I was born and raised in Escondido in a typical, soccer-filled house. I played sports for as long as I can remember and have loved every sweaty, fun and often times painful minutes. The majority of my sports life has been filled with running and soccer. In high school, I attempted volleyball, track, soccer and cross country. I learned from a young age that gymnastics and any hand-eye coordination sport was NOT my thing....
In college, I studied to be an Athletic trainer....which turned into Physical Therapist....which turned into teacher. Yeah, I know. Big jump on that last one. I worked for the YMCA for over ten years and had the privilege of working with kids all over southern California. This passion and talent of working with kids and my love of coaching lead me to teaching. (Even though I swore that I would never have a career that involved "homework," but you make weird choices when trying to properly "adult" in a quickly changing world.)
So anyways, then enters a perfect wedding to my beautifully bearded hubby, a few relocation moves around CA and a goal of finishing my Masters degree in Education. After an actually pretty fun thesis and a 6 month pregnant belly, I walked across that lovely stage to get my Teaching Credential and Master's of Education.
Flash forward a few years and I have four and a half years of teaching under my belt and find myself in Arizona. The move out here has been an absolute blessing! (Yes, it's hot - but only 3 months out of the year!) While, it has been different to be so far away from family, it has also given my family and I an opportunity to grow (literally - cue baby #2!) and bond even closer as an immediate unit. Out here, we have found new circles of friends through fitness, church and general adventures to local events. It's different, but oh so awesome.
Now that we have settled into our new life here in Phoenix, let's mix things up! Recently, after much support and encouragement from my fantastic husband, I've decided to take a step back from teaching and embark on a new adventure! I'm embracing all of my educational backgrounds and starting Bearfoot Fitness.
Bearfoot is my attempt to impact the next generation by creating mentally and physically healthy humans. My vision is to get families back together, away from their screens and outside soaking in some Vitamin D! Additionally, my goal is to reacquaint people with food so that they can see that food is fuel for their one and only body. There is so much more that I want to share about this vision and mission, so stay tuned!
